access

Most accessibility problems on a small business site are four or five missing attributes, not a redesign. These are the ones that stop a page being usable at all.

About this check

·An unlabelled form field is the expensive one

A screen reader announces a labelled field by name and an unlabelled one as "edit text". On a contact form that is annoying; on a checkout it is a customer who cannot buy. In several jurisdictions it is also a legal exposure for a business serving consumers, which is why it is weighted above the rest.

·What a machine can and cannot judge

An attribute is either present or it is not, and that is what is checked here. Whether your alt text actually describes the picture, or your colours are comfortable to read, needs a person. A clean result here means the mechanical faults are gone, not that the site has been tested with real assistive technology.

·The same work serves the crawlers

Landmarks, one h1 per page, headings that step down one level at a time and a declared language are all read by assistive technology and by every search and AI crawler. This is the one area where doing right by a person with a screen reader and doing right by an answer engine are the same task.
